The Rest Stops are amazing, and they hold a contest as to which feed station is the best. The events boasts an incredible 11 timing points to keep the integrity of the ride at its best. The event now draws athletes from over 12 countries including Canada, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Norway, Italy, UK as well as numerous outlying States - all seeking warm weather, premium riding terrain, and great camaraderie. Both started and finished at the luxurious Four Seasons Westlake Village. Heading west from Westlake Village, CA, both routes rode through rolling farmland for the first 20 miles.
There, the Classico riders turn right to headed out on a loop through scenic horse farms, while the Medio riders turned left and headed for the beach. Both routes featured about 20 miles of riding along the coast on the iconic Pacific Coast Highway.
Riders rolled through the town of Malibu, CA before heading up the biggest challenge : Latigo Canyon. This 7-mile climb ascended about 2, feet with an average grade of 5. After the initial climb there was another 6 miles featuring some big rolling hills that add up to another feet of elevation gain and loss.
After enjoying pro-level support and real-food aid stations on course, a gourmet brunch awaited riders when they reached the finish line. The BIGF is part personal challenge and part serious competition. There are now four routes of 30, 50, , and km available to suit all abilities of cyclists. There is no start to finish time as in traditional racing formats but rather timed sections that count towards your time, allowing your competitive juices to flow if you want too.
This means you can take your time between race sections, stop at the fuel stations, re-group and enjoy the ride with your friends and teammates. Afterwards, you can cool off with a refreshing swim in Lake Huron prior to relaxing to live music, while enjoying a well-deserved beer or soft drink along with some very tasty food.
